A U.S. Gas Dryer Doesn't Need 240V
A U.S. gas clothes dryer doesn't need a 240V outlet. It needs a standard 120V, 60Hz household circuit — the gas burner does the heating, and the electricity only runs the motor, the drum light, the igniter and the controls.
That's why a compact converter is enough to bring an American gas dryer overseas, and it's why so many people give their dryer away before a move when they didn't have to.

In this video we install a Kenmore 91182 gas dryer on a 220V/50Hz supply using a PowerXchanger XS-05GA, a 600W (5A) step-down voltage and frequency converter that mounts flat on the wall behind the appliance.
Why Frequency Matters, Not Just Voltage
A plain step-down transformer will give a 120V appliance the right voltage on a 220V supply, but it passes the local 50Hz through untouched. A dryer motor designed for 60Hz then turns roughly 17% slower, runs hotter, and the timer and control board lose their reference.
The XS-05GA doesn't pass anything through. It takes 50Hz mains anywhere from 200V to 240V and regenerates a clean, regulated 120V ~ 60Hz pure sine wave output, with power factor correction on the input and EMI filtering on both ends.
The Install, Step by Step
Mount the plate. The included wall-mounting kit goes up horizontally or vertically. Vertical is usually the better choice behind a dryer — it takes up less horizontal wall space in a tight laundry alcove.
Seat the unit. The XS-05GA drops onto the plate. It's 2.36 in (6 cm) deep and 10.67 lb (4.84 kg), so it sits nearly flat against the wall.
Attach the cords. The output cord is detachable and uses a 3-pin locking connector — push it in until the clip latches. Input cords ship in Type F, G, I and M for the common 220–240V outlets.
Power up, then plug in the dryer. Switch on the input, confirm the indicator light, then connect the dryer's 120V plug to the converter's output.
It Doesn't Cost You Clearance
Gas dryers need room behind them for the vent duct and the gas line — check your dryer's installation manual for the exact figure, but several inches of rear clearance is typical. Because the XS-05GA is under two and a half inches deep and mounts on the wall rather than sitting on the floor, it fits inside the gap the dryer already requires. Nothing has to move further out from the wall.
Will It Work With Your Dryer?
Two checks before you order:
Confirm it's a gas dryer. Look at the rating plate on the door jamb or the back panel. A gas dryer lists 120V, 60Hz. An electric dryer lists 240V and 24–30 amps, and no Slimline converter will run one — that's a different class of product entirely.
Check the amps. The XS-05GA supplies 5 amps / 600W continuous at 120V. Most U.S. gas dryers fall comfortably under that, but read the rating plate rather than assuming, and add anything else you plan to run on the same converter.
